Hand Stitching and Hand Tools

When we hand sew, we use the saddle stitch method, which uses two needles to weave in and out of slits punched/pricked into the leather. While sewing the leather is held within a “pony” . This type of sewing is an extremely durable and strong method; however, more time consuming.

What is the Saddle Stitch Method?

The saddle stitch method is a traditional technique used in leatherworking that involves using two needles to weave in and out of slits punched or pricked into the leather. This method creates a strong and durable seam that is less likely to unravel compared to other stitching techniques.

How is it Done?

When hand sewing with the saddle stitch method, the leather pieces are held together within a "pony" or stitching pony to keep them in place. The artisan carefully passes two needles, each threaded with its own waxed thread, through the slits in opposite directions, creating a series of interlocking stitches along the seam.

Benefits of Hand Sewing Leather

Hand sewing leather allows artisans to have greater control over the stitching process, ensuring each stitch is placed precisely and securely. This attention to detail results in a finished product that not only looks beautiful but also stands the test of time. Additionally, hand sewing allows for customization and intricate designs that may not be achievable with a machine.
